Garage door openers are designed to effortlessly operate garage doors. Sometimes due to problems, they fail to do so. When this happens, it is important to diagnose the problem and fix it.
Unless you are a trained garage door expert, it is possible that you may not know what to do. That is why we have written this to help you understand what may be happening to the garage door opener and how to possibly fix it.
A number of factors may contribute to your garage door opener's failure. Here are some of them.
Your garage door will not open if it is locked. Check the side of the garage door to see if it is locked using a silver bolt. Most residents or businesses lock the garage doors and if that is the case, the door will not operate until the lock is removed.
Modern garage doors use two sensors, one on each side, to check for obstacles before and during operation. The doors are designed not to open or close if the sensors detect obstacles or the “eyes” of the sensors fail to see each other. Check to make sure no debris is blocking the sensors from seeing each other. Remove the debris if applicable.
This may not apply to your situation but if you are trying to operate the garage door using the remote control, it is possible the remote control batteries are dead. If it has been a while since you replaced the remote control batteries, now may be the best time to do so. Dead remote control batteries are easy to diagnose. Press the remote control button and a light should come on. If nothing happens, change the battery.
Take a look at your garage door springs and see if any is broken. If the springs are broken, they need to be replaced immediately. Caution: Do not attempt to replace your garage door springs unless you are a trained professional. They are under pressure and can easily result in injury or death.
